Yamada Hanatarou is a shinigami, or Soul Reaper, from the Soul Society, where people go after being sent there after they die (unless, of course, they're sent to hell.)
Hanatarou is 7th Seated in the 4th Division. He’s not particularly strong, nor is he particularly open. He’s meek, and had little self confidence until running across Kurosaki Ichigo and Shiba Ganjyu, who at the time were on a journey to save someone he also wanted to save, Kuchiki Rukia. Throughout that experience, his confidence grew somewhat and he came to consider the two his first true friends. Hanatarou is not a fighter, rather, he is a healer, and a skilled one at that. He healed near fatal wounds overnight, though he required some rest afterwards.
When he was kidnapped, Hanatarou was making his rounds, sweeping/mopping rooms for the many patients in the 4th Division’s clinic, minding his own business, for once not being bothered by anyone. Poor, poor Hanatarou.
